CS 10, Fall 1997
Lab 1: Introduction to Hypercard
The purpose of this lab is to introduce you to the Macintosh environment
and to the Hypercard tool.
Feel free to experiment and do not hesitate to ask questions.
Formatting and ejecting your disks
Insert a blank disk into the disk drive.
If your disk is not formatted the machine will automatically ask you
whether it should format it for you.
Whether or not your disk requires formatting, name it:
CS10-Your Name
Always include your full name as part of the name of any disk you plan
to use for this class.
There are two ways to eject a disk.
You can either drag the disk icon to the Trash
or you can choose the "Eject disk" option form the "Special" menu.
Directions to the CS10 folder on the Classes file server
File servers provide a place to store shared software.
This section explains how to access our CS10 area on the general file server.
- Pull down the apple menu (at the top left-hand corner of your screen)
and select the "Chooser".
- A new window with three areas will appear.
In the upper left area select "AppleShare".
Then in the lower left area select "SC Servers EN"
(SC stands for Swarthmore College).
Finally in the right area select "Data & Software".
Then click on "OK" to indicate that you are done.
- Another new window will appear. You should log on as a "Guest" so
select this and then click on "OK".
- Again a new window will appear.
Select "Class Folders" and then click on "OK".
You should see that a new icon has been placed on your desktop.
This icon represents the link between your particular computer and
the file server.
- You can now close the Chooser by clicking on the small square in the
upper left corner of the Chooser window.
- Double-click on the new icon called "Class Folders".
- A collection of folders are contained within "Class Folders".
First double-click on "Natural Sciences + Engineering", then on
"Computer Science", and finally on the "CS10" folder.
- Drag the folder called "module1" to your disk icon.
This will copy the folder to your own disk.
- Close all the open windows then drag the "Class Folders" icon to
the Trash.
This closes the link between your computer and the file server.
You should always destroy this link when you are done so that others
can get access to the server.
Now you're ready to start working from your own disk.
If your own files ever get messed up you can always get a fresh start by
re-copying the files from the file server.
Using Hypercard
Double click on the icon for your disk.
In the window that appears, double click on the folder "module1".
You will see a number of Hypercard stacks.
Turn to Lab Exercise 2 on page 15 of your textbook and begin working.
Complete the entire stack of cards, even though 2.4 tells you to stop
at card 14.
- On card 3:
- How do you get back to card 3 after going to Hypercard's Home Card?
- On card 10:
- Skip part 2.
- On card 14:
- What's the difference between "prev" and "back?"
- You are asked to go to the Hypercard home stack and then use
find to return.
Instead go to the AE home stack and use find to return.
- On card 16:
- Only try the unstarred stacks.
- On card 17:
- You should not shutdown the lab machines.
