Social Good: Information Technology R&D

 

Information Technology and R&D: Critical Trends and Issues is an exhaustive effort by the Congress' Office of Technology Assessment to review all the issues in information technology research and development.  Of special interest to this project are sections on the goals of technology and strategies for federal involvement in information technology R&D.

The goals for IT R&D stated by the report are:

  • Support National Defense
  • Provide for Social Needs
  • Promote Economic Growth
  • Advance Basic Understanding of the World
  • Enhance National Prestige
  • Support Civilian Agency Missions

The strategies relate to the following topics:

  • Impacts of Telecommunications Deregulation
  • Scientific and Technological Manpower
  • Changing Roles of Universities
  • Foreign Programs
  • Science Policy

and many of the recommendations are incorporated into this project.
