Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2001 12:27:25 -0500 From: Daniel Eisenbud Subject: Georgia to Maine Dear Friends, As some of you have heard in the last week or so, I'm planning to hike the Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine, this spring. It is a little more than 2,000 miles, and will take four or five months. I'll be hiking up to the start of the trail at the summit of Springer Mountain on March 17th. Tentatively, I'll get to Mt. Katahdin, in Maine, around the beginning of August. After that, I'll be starting a Ph.D. program in mathematics. I've been accepted at Duke, and am waiting to hear about Columbia and Cornell. For those of you in the Boston area, you're invited to come over and say goodbye on Friday evening at 8:00. I'll have various food and drink, and while you're welcome to bring something along if you'd like, most important is that you bring yourself, and any others you'd like to. Please RSVP, but if you don't get around to RSVP'ing, don't let that stop you from coming. I live at 48 Plymouth St. #1, in Cambridge, very near the Kendall Sq. Cinema, and my phone number is 491-4991. I'll be leaving for points south on the 11th, stopping in New York to visit relatives and in DC to finish up my job on the way to Georgia. I would love to get mail, and I will have time to write lots of letters and postcards back. If you want to hear from me, and think that I might not have your address, please send it to me. Below is a list of places I will be stopping to get mail along the way. You should probably send mail no later than two weeks before I get to a given post office, to give it time to get there, and to allow for variations in my schedule, which is somewhat tentative. If you miss that date, just send the letter to the next post office on the list. Letters should be sent to: Daniel Eisenbud General Delivery at each post office. Please write "Hold for northbound through-hiker" on the envelope: they all know what this means, and will hold the mail a lot longer before returning it. If I'm way ahead of or way behind schedule, I'll try to send out another email with more info about where I'll be when. Have a wonderful spring! The list of maildrops: (note that the dates are when I get there, so you should subtract two weeks from these dates to see where to send me things!) 27 March: Fontana Dam, NC 28733 6 April: Erwin, TN 37650 13 April: Damascus, VA 24236 23 April: Pearisburg, VA 24134 6 May: Waynesboro, VA 22980 21 May: Duncannon, PA 17020 28 May: Delaware Water Gap, PA 18327 12 June: Cheshire, MA 01225 22 June: Hanover, NH 03755 6 July: Stratton, ME 04982 After the last maildrop, I should be back in email range within a few weeks, and will send an update about where I am and where I'm moving to. -Dan -- Daniel E.
