CS 15 -- Homework 1
S refers to Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.
P&P refers to Introduction to Computing Systems, 2nd edition by
Patt and Patel.
Don't worry that Patt & Patel seems to be directed
toward CS majors. I know that you are not majors. I will expect
considerable understanding of this material but not the kind of
mastery of this material that I would expect of CS majors.
Read means read carefully (perhaps taking notes or working out
ideas with pencil and paper).
Skim means read quickly, don't worry about the details.
Due: Wednesday, September 3
- Skim S (Stephenson, "Cryptonomicon") pp. 1-59. This should
be a really fun read.

Hofstadter, author of "Godel, Escher and Bach". You must
be on a Swarthmore College network to be able to read this
file. The book is out of print but there are two copies of the
book on 2-hour reserve
at Cornell Library.

it in; but, be prepared to share
your ideas at our first meeting.
