CS 15 -- Homework 1

S refers to Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. P&P refers to Introduction to Computing Systems, 2nd edition by Patt and Patel.
Don't worry that Patt & Patel seems to be directed toward CS majors. I know that you are not majors. I will expect considerable understanding of this material but not the kind of mastery of this material that I would expect of CS majors.

Read means read carefully (perhaps taking notes or working out ideas with pencil and paper).
Skim means read quickly, don't worry about the details.

Due: Wednesday, September 3

  1. Skim S (Stephenson, "Cryptonomicon") pp. 1-59. This should be a really fun read.
  2. Read and pay particular attention to S pp. 18-20, 24-25, 31.
  3. Read the Introduction to "Alan Turing: The Enigma". The book is by Andrew Hodges. This introduction is written by Douglas Hofstadter, author of "Godel, Escher and Bach". You must be on a Swarthmore College network to be able to read this file. The book is out of print but there are two copies of the book on 2-hour reserve at Cornell Library.
  4. Read P&P pp 1-2, 7-16
  5. Skim P&P pp 3-6
  6. Read Amendments 1, 3, 4, 5, 9 of the U.S. Bill of Rights
  7. Read The Undercover Parent
  8. Read Student Files Are Exposed on Web Site
  9. Read Prescription data used to assess consumers
  10. Read Privacy in an Age of Terabytes and Terror
  11. Read (not so new anymore but still out there) New Computer Virus for Voyeurs
  12. Read Privacy and Consumer Profiling
  13. Read Data Mining Tells Government and Business a Lot About You
  14. Skim and follow a few links from The A to Z's of Privacy
  15. Read Georgia Takes a Beating in the Cyberwar With Russia
  16. Think hard about what privacy is and whether it is an obsolete idea or something to be cherished. Why? Write a short statement on this. You will not have to hand it in; but, be prepared to share your ideas at our first meeting.
