Remote Access Info

Hi CS21ers! Here’s some info you will need for the rest of the semester, since we are now doing everything online, and you are working from remote locations. We haven’t figured everything out yet, but we are trying. :) We will update this page when we know more.

Please let us know (email or message us on slack) if something isn’t working for you (either technically, or otherwise).

software you need on your home computer

ssh
- macs should already have this, just open a Terminal and try something like this: ssh -Y hpotter1@lab.cs.swarthmore.edu (change hpotter1 to your username)
- windows users: can use powershell (how-to doc, see Aline’s video) private or install putty (see Jeff’s video)
- optional graphics: for either of these, if you want to run programs that use Zelle graphics, you’ll need extra software. See our help page for info on installing xming (for windows) and xquartz (for macs)
atom with ftp-remote-edit: this allows you to run atom on your home machine and connect it to the CS machines. See our atom ftp-remote-edit help page or another video for atom and ftp-remote-edit
zoom for video meetings/lectures: use your swarthmore login and password to access/install zoom
slack: you should have received invites for the SwatCS21-S20 slack workspace. Accept the invitation and look at all the channels (we’ll use different channels for lab, office hours, etc)

class plan/times/etc

lectures with zoom at the same class times
we will save recordings of zoom lectures to youtube for later viewing
we will also post summaries on the schedule/class website as before
it’s ok if you can’t make scheduled class time, due to timezone issues
all swarthmore classed will be pass/fail, with ability to uncover grade at end

lab sessions, ninja sessions, office hours

we will use slack for the help queue
we will set up 1-on-1 zoom sessions as needed
some office hour times may change — see slack/class web page

class quizzes

We are still working on this, and will let you know when we figure it out. No quiz this week (see schedule). Quiz 4 is April 3.

final exam

grading

We will be using gradescope.com. You will be getting an email from us/gradescope soon.
